INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE

John Wollaston is among a small number of independent schools in Western Australia authorised as a world school to teach the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP).

What is an IB education?

The International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) is a non-profit foundation based in Geneva, Switzerland, which encourages students to be active learners, well-rounded individuals and engaged world citizens.

The PYP is designed for children aged five to 12 and is regarded as world’s best practice in primary education.

Students are encouraged to ask challenging questions, critically reflect, develop research skills, learn how to learn, and carry out community service.

While children still follow the Australian Curriculum, the PYP encourages students to step beyond the confines of traditional learning in each subject area and structures frameworks around six main themes:

  • Who we are

  • Where we are in place and time

  • How we express ourselves

  • How the world works

  • How we organise ourselves

  • Sharing the planet

Teachers are guided by these six themes as they design units of inquiry that both transcend and articulate conventional subject boundaries in Languages, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science and Technology, The Arts, and Personal, Social and Physical Education.

Students grow and develop academically, creatively, emotionally, physically and spiritually, becoming:

  • Inquirers

  • Thinkers

  • Communicators

  • Risk-takers

  • Knowledgeable

  • Principled

  • Open-minded

  • Caring

  • Balanced and

  • Reflective

The School welcomes enquiries about the Primary Years Programme through our PYP Coordinator.
