It takes a student-centred approach to develop each child as an independent, self-directed, life-long learner.

While students participate in their normal classes, they are given opportunities to extend their learning by taking on new stimulation and experiences to develop their potential and satisfy their learning needs.

The Pegasus Programme

In the Primary School, students tackle Inquiry-based projects, Art, Languages and some competitive units such as Mathematical Olympiad and Tournament of Minds. Access to laptops, computer laboratories and interactive whiteboards allows these students to utilise the benefits of modern technology.

In the Secondary School, the Pegasus programme promotes creative thinking, problem solving and collaborative learning through cross-curricular State and National events such as the Da Vinci DecathlonBook In A Day and the Solar Car Challenge. The training, preparation and participation that occurs for these events sees participants learning to work in cooperation with others whose strengths will be different to, but complement their own.

John Wollaston is also a partner school of the University of Western Australia’s Girls in Engineering (GIE) programme. Girls and boys enjoy practical activities facilitated by staff and students from UWA’s Engineering faculty and Rio Tinto Engineers. Girls are also eligible for GIE excursions to UWA as a strategy to encourage more females to study within the fiend of Engineering.

In the classroom students who excel in a particular subject are given Pegasus work to challenge and extend their knowledge. Students also compete in National competitions for subjects such as Mathematics and Chemistry, as well as The Stock Market Game in Economics and The Simpson Prize in History. In addition, our students have been involved in leadership programmes such as The Statewide Student Parliament, The Sir Charles Court Young Leaders Programme and The Amanda Young Foundation Eco Health Summit.

Each year the Pegasus programme adapts to take on opportunities to suit the strengths of the cohort and the individual students at John Wollaston.

The Pegasus Society

The membership is by semester and is based on a student’s academic report. Members receive a certificate each time they qualify and a badge presented on the first membership occasion.

Each semester Pegasus Society members have the opportunity to nominate an excursion venue and the have the option to participate. Excursions have included Bounce, Lazer Blaze and the very popular, Adventure World. Members also enjoy the activities such as hearing from guest speakers, perhaps a catered morning tea or the first option to nominate for Pegasus events.
