Within our pastoral care system, we operate a number of initiatives to support the wellbeing of each child.
SPECIAL PROGRAMMES
The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award is the world's leading achievement award for young people. Bringing together practical experiences and life skills to create committed global citizens and equipping young people for life.
The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award is:
• Open to all young people aged 14-24, regardless of their background and circumstances.
• About personal development: it is a non-competitive, enjoyable, voluntary and balanced program, which requires sustained effort over time.
• A framework that enables young people to demonstrate self-development that is internationally recognised.
At John Wollaston participation in the award structure is introduced to Year 8 students in Term 4 to give them an overview of the programme. Students in Years 9 – 12 can register at anytime in the school year if they choose to take on the challenge of the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award. The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award is comprised of four sections: Service, Skill, Physical Recreation and Adventurous Journey, and includes a Residential Project at Gold level. The Award is comprised of three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold – each progressively more challenging and requiring different time commitments.

Rainbows Programme
The Rainbows Programme, in the Primary School, assists children who are coping with anxiety, grief or loss.
Several staff have undertaken specific training to facilitate groups of up to six students who meet once a week for 10 -12 weeks. During these sessions, students are able to talk about their situations in a safe and confidential environment. They write their thoughts and feelings in a private journal and develop an understanding that there are other children who are also experiencing similar issues.
With personal matters often affecting school performance, the Rainbows Programme provides an outlet for students and a chance for them to become more settled in the classroom environment.
