Drama and Theatre Arts

Year 8 Drama students learn about Children’s Theatre, developing their understanding of various conventions of the style, and working with a script towards performance. This culminated in a series of performances for audiences comprised of Years 4-6 Primary students. Students performed Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes, including Little Red and The Three Pigs, Goldilocks, Jack and the Beanstalk and Hansel and Gretel.

Year 9 Theatre Arts students also had the opportunity to perform for a live audience, presenting a sold-out after-school show for family and friends. Ms Harris’ class performed Split Decision, while Miss Thomas’ class brought The Wizard of Oz in 30 Minutes to the stage. This evening also featured Year 10 student, Elizabeth singing a beautiful rendition of Part of Your World.

The Year 10 Drama class also performed for their family and friends in The Mad Mechanicals, an adaption of Shakespeare’s class, A Midsummer Night’s Dream.  Year 10s were able to convey the comedy of Shakespeare’s words, with some modern takes included in the performance.

Students from Years 7-12 participated in Play in a Day. Over the course of one day, the students wrote, rehearsed, and then finally performed their plays in a competitive evening performance. All plays centre around a mystery prop, revealed the morning of the event. The prop was a large golden egg, which was used in a variety of ways, including to capture Disney characters, as a prize containing 67 million dollars, and the treasure at the end of a map. The day allows students to develop skills as playwrights, directors, designers, and actors, and to develop collaborative teamwork skills in a supportive environment. The winner of the day was Team Cheerio’s, who wrote an engaging and comedic play, ‘The Hunger Games (but even better)’.
