Channel Seven Reporter and Presenter of Sports

Q&A with Foundation Student, Ryan Daniels

When I started at JWACS the school only went up to Year 3 – and the classrooms weren’t built yet!

We were a small but mighty school that grew into a vibrant community – it always felt special being part of something that was new and growing. In Year 5 I had a fantastic teacher, Mr Steve Barter, who ignited my love of writing, and sports. The two things which would lead me to my current career.

Mrs Lander ran a tight ship in the library, with a smiling face – and our principal Ms Morgan was a positive force. I met my wonderful wife Kelly at JWACS, and we now have two beautiful kids. We still see lots of friends from JWACS!

I was a Prefect for Scott House in Year 12, I loved representing the students in this role.

How has your career developed, since graduation?

After graduating I worked in hospitality for a few years, while studying journalism and broadcasting at Murdoch University. For the past 17 years I’ve worked for Channel Seven as a reporter and presenter of sports – while also writing a column for the West Australian newspaper and filling various roles in Perth radio.

I’ve been fortunate enough to cover AFL Grand Finals, Olympic and Commonwealth Games, Cricket and Football World Cups, most of the time my job doesn’t feel like work at all!

Do you have any advice for current JWACS students?

Don’t put too much pressure on yourself, you don’t need to have it all figured out in high school. Be kind, be respectful, and be curious.
