Earlier this term, 22 students from across a number of AngliSchools schools in Australia took part in a transformative service-learning trip to Samoa through the AngliSchools Samoa Service program. The purpose of the trip was to immerse in Samoan culture, contribute to the local community, and grow through shared experiences.
The first week was dedicated to cultural exploration. We travelled across the island, visiting iconic sites like Piula Cave Pool, Palolo Deep, and the Sua Ocean Trench. We attended a church bazaar, helped with face-painting, and visited a cultural village where we learned traditional practices such as coconut leaf weaving, underground cooking, and tattooing. The vibrant culture, rooted in family, respect for elders, and communal living, left a lasting impression.
In the second week, we served at All Saints’ Anglican School. We assisted in classrooms, led learning activities, and helped paint the School’s library. A highlight was coral planting with Year 6 students, which deepened our understanding of environmental stewardship. The relaxed school structure and limited resources offered valuable insight into the differences between Samoan and Australian education.
Throughout the trip, we attended church services, participated in traditional ceremonies, and formed strong bonds with each other and the local community. Without mobiles phones, we connected more deeply and reflected on our experiences. This has enabled us to share personal growth stories—gaining confidence, independence, and a new appreciation for teamwork and teaching. One student reflected, “I learned I’m not as shy as I thought. Everyone was so kind, and without my phone, I made real friendships.”
Message to Students and Staff: To staff—thank you for your support and preparation. To students—if you get the chance, take it. This trip is more than a holiday; it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to grow, give back, and gain unforgettable memories.
