Valuing, Appreciating and Celebrating Learning at JWACS

At JWACS, we believe that learning is about far more than academic results. It is about growth, effort, character and the development of young people who are confident, reflective and motivated to continually strive to be their best.

One of the ways we nurture this culture is through our Gratitude and Personal Best Certificates initiative. Through a simple yet meaningful certificate system, members of the JWACS community can recognise the efforts, achievements and positive contributions of our students in ways that go beyond the traditional classroom reward.

This approach reflects our belief that learning is a shared journey between students, teachers and families, and that every milestone, large or small, deserves to be noticed and celebrated.

Encouraging Gratitude in Our Community

Gratitude Certificates encourage students to recognise and appreciate the positive actions of others within our community.

These certificates can be awarded by any member of the JWACS community to another (students, teachers or parents) when someone’s efforts to make our school a supportive and positive place have been noticed.

By encouraging students to express gratitude regularly, we help cultivate a mindset of appreciation and kindness. Whether it is thanking a classmate for their help, acknowledging a teacher’s support, or recognising a family member’s encouragement, these moments help strengthen the sense of belonging within our school community.

Celebrating Personal Growth

While gratitude celebrates others, Personal Best Certificates focus on recognising a student’s own growth and progress.

These certificates acknowledge when a student achieves a personal goal or demonstrates meaningful improvement in their learning. Importantly, the focus is not on comparison with others, but on recognising individual effort, persistence and reflection.

The goals can be highly personalised. For one student, a Personal Best might mean mastering a challenging concept in Mathematics. For another, it could mean developing greater organisation, perseverance or confidence.

By recognising these moments, students learn that attitude, effort and resilience are valued just as much as outcomes.

A Whole Community Approach to Learning

A unique aspect of the JWACS approach is that all members of the community can participate in recognising student growth.

Parents and carers play an important role in this process. Families often see the effort, determination and progress that happens beyond the classroom, and their insights help provide a more holistic picture of a child’s development.

By inviting parents to participate, we reinforce the message that learning happens everywhere – at school, at home and within the wider community.

Recognising the Learner Profile in Action

Each certificate also links to the IB Learner Profile, helping students recognise the attributes they are developing as learners and people.

When a student is recognised for being reflective, principled, a communicator or a risk-taker, they begin to understand how these qualities shape their learning journey. Over time, this helps students develop greater self-awareness and confidence in their own growth.

The certificates also allow teachers to see how these attributes are being demonstrated both in and outside the classroom, providing valuable insights into the many ways students are developing.

Celebrating the Joy of Learning

Above all, this initiative is about celebrating the joy of learning and growth.

Students take great pride in sharing their Personal Best moments or expressing gratitude to someone who has made a difference in their day. These small but meaningful moments help reinforce a culture where effort, kindness and perseverance are valued and recognised.

At JWACS, we believe that when students feel seen, supported and celebrated, they are empowered to continue striving to become the very best version of themselves.
